GEMS

GEMS release entrancing new single "Soak", play the Troubadour on 10/9

Lindsay Pitts and Clifford John Usher together form the avant-garde group GEMS. Their debut album, out October 30th, will include a set list of sulky, ingenious and mystical pop. Kill The Ones You Love includes the engulfing single "Soak", which starts off with dreamy guitar strums and finger snaps until it ignites into entrancing synth transitions once the chorus hits. GEMS has a way of hypnotizing their listeners with powerful lyrics on loss of love, fighting the pain and treading the water in order to save yourself. Anyone suffering or who has suffered from heartache can connect to the lyrical compassion of "Soak", trapping us in the haunting drops of every beat and capturing the essence of what it takes to move on.

GEMS begins their North American Tour on October 9th at the Troubadour. For Fall dates head on over to their website as well as their Soundcloud to hear more from Kill The Ones You Love. - Kayla Hay

Interview with GEMS

- by Natan Press

GEMS expoloded onto the DC scene last year, winning the Deli's DC Area Emerging Artist of the Year in 2013 with almost all of the juror votes. Their solid production, chill sounds and the beautiful voice of Lindsay Pitts combine to give the local listener a band they can cheer for as GEMS speeds along towards national recognition. In this interview, we tried to find out how GEMS was able to do so much in such a short time, and how they developed their thoughtful style and professional work-ethic.

How did the band begin? What were your goals and aspirations in the beginning? Why start a band?

We've been doing music together for years. It's really the only thing I can imagine doing.

How did you develop your aesthetic (your sound, your imagery, your look)? Where does the name come from?

I think one way to be creative is to limit yourself. When you're making art, it's easy to want to do everything. We decided to work within certain constraints, I think it forces you to think outside the box a little.

Why singles, and not albums? We do all of our own production and mixing and everything. When we would finish a song we were into, I didn’t want to wait until we had a bunch of songs to share it with people. I wanted to share it right away so people could be a part of the process with us. We did put out an EP a few months ago, so we stored some songs up for that.

How has the internet and social media helped or hurt you? How have you taken advantage of it, and how has it affected your progress?

The internet is an amazing tool! Soundcloud is an awesome community of people sharing music they love. Sites like that have allowed our music to spread to people all over the world.

Who’s on your team? How did you find help (management, publicity) if you did? How do they help you? What have you been able to do on your own to help make your music a success?

We have a wonderful team. They came to us because of the hard work we did ourselves in the beginning. We held ourselves to a really high standard with the production and songwriting. I think it spoke to people and the music spread online.

How do you see GEMS progressing from here? What‘s next, both creatively and professionally?

Lots of touring, probably another EP and an album. And always challenging ourselves, working to get better every day.

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging DC Area Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging DC Area Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it of with remarkable flair! Kudos to GEMS (pictured) for winning it!

First, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ DC Area scene experts (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music the DC Area produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

DC bands on the rise: GEMS release debut EP 'Medusa' at U Street on 11.14

I wonder if this decade will be remembered as the "Dream Pop" years - these days the genre seems to offer an endless reservoir of new acts coming out to grab the spotlight, from The XX to Beach House and so on, which means there's a growing public out there appreciating this sound. DC's GEMS are one of the dream pop bands of the moment, thanks to two gorgeous singles "Sinking Stone" (streaming) and Pegasus, plus a string of other above average songs already available online. There's a lot of anticipation about their first official release, which will be celebrated with two shows at DC's U Street Music Hall on November 14 and at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg on the 11th.
