Icewater

Recommended shows: Icewater plays Baby's All Right on 05.13

Brooklyn's Icewater writes songs that are spaced-out, anthemic, and optimistic. Not that the band hasn’t seen its share of tragedy. During the recording of their cheekily titled 2013 LP, "Collectors Edition," guitarist and founding member Grant Martin unexpectedly passed away, giving both its buoyant and small moments of sadness an extra layer of depth. The band released a more upbeat, but not necessarily sunnier, self titled EP at the end of 2014. Check out single "Wisecrack" below and don't miss the band live at Baby;s All Right on May 13. - Emilio Herce

JP's CMJ 2014 Day 2: Caveman, Wampire, Splashh, Celestial Shore, J Ferdinand, Icewater, Ronald Paris, Future Punx

I had a bit of a late start today. I slept through three alarms, and when I finally did wake up, I felt like I had cement running through my veins. Sore, hungover, out of it. It was well past noon and I had wanted, or planned, already to be caffeinated, at a show, and to have had my day 1 recap written; not to be standing over a stove reheating the chicken over rice with white sauce I’d impulsively gotten at 4am. Sonofabitch. I shot over (and by shot, I very much mean moseyed) to Cake Shop for the Terrorbird showcase. Clearly it had been underway a good amount. Between eating godawful leftovers, writing up yesterday’s happenings, crawling into a shower and then crawling to the coffee shop, it was something like 4pm! It’s a terrible feeling when it’s the first time you’re stepping outside for the day, and you can see that the sun’s already starting to go down. NYC band on the rise: Icewater releases debut album on 02.01 at Baby's All Right

Delicate and detailed, 'Bite Fresh Air' by one year old Brooklyn band Icewater (streaming) is a song of understated dexterity, all meandering melodies exploring the soundscape, waves of color and visions of yearning. Not a folk song, it is though earnest and entrancing, with shifting strains of elegant guitars and a hazy spirit that lays over droney synths and hypnotic, gentle beats. Although housing a bittersweet sound that surely must be imposed by the listener (given that it was recorded before the tragic and sudden death of founder member Grant Martin in July this year), there's a gentle warming feel to it that endures and endears throughout its wandering. The song is taken from the band debut album "Collectors Edition" whose release will be celebrated with a show at Baby's All Right on February 1st. - Francesca Baker
