Katie Von Schleicher

Wilder Maker shares video in reverse for new single (fronted by Katie Von Schleicher

In 2017, Wilder Maker released a two-track 7” with Saddle Creek Records featuring “New Streets” and “Only Child.” Those two tracks saw the group tightening up it’s ‘70s and roots rock inspired sound with the crisp vocals of keyboardist Katie Von Schleicher (who performs under her own name as well) coming more to the forefront. On Wilder Maker’s newest single “Drunk Driver”—which comes ahead of the band’s upcoming full-length Zion, out July 13 via Northern Spy Records—Von Schleicher’s voice leads the way again with excellent results. Over a hypnotic build Von Schleicher delivers lyrics with an emotional weight that sounds effortless: “I loved her with no thought for me, reckless as a drunk driver exhales and turns the key.” The motion of the arrangement toward an ending swirl of keys and guitar pairs well with the single’s video which plays an intimate party in reverse from the sleepy subway ride home through the pizza and shared drinks to the first greetings before sunset. Record of the Month: Katie Von Schleicher

Late in 2017, NYC based singer-songwriter (and vocalist for Wilder Maker) Katie Von Schleicher came out with a poignant and plaintive album with the not-so-poetic title Shitty Hits. From the very beginning, opener The Image treats the listener to Von Schleicher’s unusual, yet elegant melodies, supported by an unexpectedly noisy production based on a new, intriguing approach to loud/quiet/loud. The results are spectacular. The perfectly controlled, vaguely industrial clangor keeps coming in the following tracks, together with Katie’s incredibly beautiful vocal lines, forging a record that’s as unique as it is enjoyable and moving. Perhaps it’s true, these songs aren’t hits, but, on the other hand, they are definitely art.

Katie is touring the US and Europe this spring, don't miss the 4.06 show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and her performances at SXSW.

Katie Von Schleicher plays Union Pool on 10.19 before UK/EU tour

Singer-songwriter and vocalist for Wilder Maker's Katie Von Schleicher will play Union Pool as part of LPR Presents on October 19th. She's kept busy promoting her second commercial album, self-depreciatively titled Shitty Hits, which came out in July and was well received by Pitchfork, The Guardian, PopMatters, and other major publications. The Union Pool show will be one of Von Schleicher's last in NYC for a while, as she's setting off on a grand UK/EU tour for most of the fall. She'll venture through the UK, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands before heading back to the states and NYC in December. Hear "Sell It Back" from Shitty Hits below, and catch her before she crosses the pond. - Will Sisskind

NYC Songwriter Katie Von Schleicher opens for Eleanor Friedberger on 11.09 at Pianos

NYC songwriter Katie Von Schleicher will be opening for Eleanor Friedberger (former lead singer of The Fiery Furnaces) at Pianos on November 09. Back in 2012, Katie released a beautiful eight track mini album entitled "Silent Days," featuring streaming single "When The Rain Comes." The record follows folk rock coordinates that suit Katie's full bodied alto and passionately intimate lyrics.  Since that release, it looks like Katie only released two singles online, both slow, stripped out ballads: 2013's "White Flag" and this year's "My Body on Through," hopefully is a sign of a new record to come. You can also see her live tonight at Deli sponsored event The Hum at the Manhattan Inn.

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC Roots artists - check it out!
