Halloween weekend technically kicked off yesterday, but in the spirit of keeping the party going, make sure you drop by the early set at Analog Cafe tonight. Presale tickets may not be available anymore, but seeing locals Shannon Entropy with New York's Sunflower Bean and the Lemon Twigs is worth the $12 door price.

Things are kicking off early with doors at 6pm, but try not to miss Shannon Entropy's indie meets psych-hop set. Their atypical approach to sonance was first shared with the world earlier this year through their debut The Tamale EP, which also helped them win one of our Artist of the Month polls back in September.

Shannon Entropy is truly unlike any other indie act in town so it makes sense they were asked to open for the poppy glam rock of the Lemon Twigs and bedroom rock of Sunflower Bean. It'll be a lively evening performance worth checking out.

It's somewhat ironic that one of the hottest and most provocatively stylish NYC bands of this decade is hailing from that strip of land New Yorkers often (always?) look down on: Long Island. The D'Addario Brothers, aka The Lemon Twigs, look and sound like something your average Brooklyn hipster might frown upon, but their predecessors from fifty years ago would have certainly disagreed with that stance. At a time when the majority of local rockers find inspiration in the noisy and boring looking '90s (by the way, was there a NYC grunge band in the '90s?), the duo, similarly to what Foxygen did five or so years ago, responds with a visually and sonically striking revival of the art pop of the '70s, with glamorous references to David Bowie's androginous look - which, by the way, was born after the frequentation of the promiscuous lifestyle surrounding Andy Wharol's NYC factory. But, of course, none of this would matter if their songs weren't powerful and memorable, which they are. Check out the video for single 'As Long As We're Together' (which took them to the Top 10 of our NYC charts for emerging artists on this same page) and the one for previous single 'These Words.'

This Long Island teen brother duo is set for an exciting year, having recently signed with legendary British label 4AD. First single—“These Words” b/w “As Long As We're Together”—is not merely post-modern mischief. It’s full of seventies cliché, the kind which elegizes funky guitars, prog synths, smooth choruses, and metallic band logos (e.g. Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden). In this case, a hypervigilant sensitivity to the past doesn’t detract, but feels freshly imbued with the spirit of youth.
