Lucius

Delicious Audio Interview with Lucius about recording

It’s rare to see a band mature as fast as Lucius did. Started as a mellow and rather ordinary duo of female singer songwriters, this project in the last 2 years or so has expanded and grown in unexpected, abnormal yet wonderful ways. Their impressive performance at our Deli NYC B.E.A.F. 2011 event showcased a band that, with a little imagination in the arrangement and performance departments, can take traditional songwriting to an entirely new level. Music fans (and industry) seem to be noticing, since they have started to sell out shows in NYC and Austin during SXSW. These two ladies can write good songs and sing beautifully, and with the help of the two boys in the band, put on a show at once emotional and powerful. One of the guys, drummer Dan Molad, is also in charge of recording the band, which mostly happens in the Brooklyn apartment he shares with singer Jess Wolfe. We asked him a few question related to that department. – Read the full Delicious Audio interview here.

CAVEMAN

Placing at #55 in our previous Best NYC for Emerging Artists Poll, Caveman in one year grew their reputation the old fashioned way, earning their fans one by one, with their songs and live shows. Heading to SXSW 2012, they are now one of the most blogged emerging artists out there (with the only exception of Pitchfork, which still has to review their stunning debut "CoCo Beware").

You can read the cover feature we gave this band back in the summer of 2011 here.

LUCIUS

Lucius

The two singers from Lucius are a dangerous tag team, sounding powerful without becoming overbearing, tender without becoming too cutesy. Meeting while in college at Boston before traveling to live in Bushwick, they must know each other well, as their voices work together in an uncannily close relationship.

Lucius will be featured in the Spring 2012 NYC issue of The Deli, you can read an interview from 2011 here.

WIDOWSPEAK

Widowspeak

Captured Tracks' most mellow signee, Widowspeak is also the band with the most potential in that lo-fi leaning roster. The band emanates a strange beautiful mysterious nostalgia that lingers deep within old souls. Their music is unobtrusive — it takes its time and slowly Molly Hamilton’s vocal melodies seep through Robert Thomas’ searing leads and Michael Stasiak’s steady groove. Old musical acquaintances from Tacoma, Washington, Micheal Stasiak and Molly Hamilton decamped to New York after a label they contributed to fell apart. Many moons later Michael urged Molly—who had little faith in her electric guitar skills and showmanship—to acquire a used Dan Electro and start writing songs.

Lucius releases video + celebrates EP release at Bowery on 02.17

Rootsy ensemble Lucius once again exceeded our expectations with this stunning video of the song "Go Home" - the single from their upcoming EP. The band will celebrate its release in style with a show at Bowery Ballroom on February 17. Lucius will grace the cover of our upcoming NYC spring issue of The Deli - a spot they won by placing second in our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists (since winners Caveman already were on a previous cover of The Deli).

Lucius wins The Deli's Best of NYC 2011 fans' poll, followed by Stephie Koplan and Brothers

After 12 days of voting, the wondrous, female driven, rootsy-pop band Lucius was voted by Deli readers and music fans as The Deli's Best Emerging NYC Artist of 2011. We've been big fans of this group since we first booked them at our B.E.A.F. party in May 2011 - we recommend you to see them live at The Mercury Lounge on January 25, they put together one of the most fun live shows in town.

In the last couple of months we've been talking a lot about Stephie Koplan & The Pedestrian, a female fronted pop rock band with tons of potential that recently moved from New England to the NYC area. Their recent video of their power pop single "Jerk!" - inspired to the atmospheres of the TV show "Madmen" - casts singer Stephie as an adorably sassy housewife and was featured by Spinner as their "Video of the Day" in December. They placed second in our fans' and readers' poll.

A band we haven't covered before, Brothers - 3rd in this poll - play Rock'n'Roll drenched in southern twang (and probably also Jack Daniels). The band is currently putting the final touches on their debut full length, but if you are in the mood for an unpretentious and in your face rock party, don't wait any longer and check them out live - or at least watch this teaser of their single "Real Long Way to Go".

Big kudos also to Futurist and Merrily & the Poison Orchard, respectively 4th and 5th. Here's the Readers' and Fans Poll Top 20, full results here.

The overall results of our Year End Poll (including jurors' and Deli writers' votes) will be released very soon, stay tuned!
