Radiator Hospital

Weekend Warrior, August 9 - 11

We’ve certainly been getting our fair share of talented musician transplants. One of the finest lyricists from the new crop of artists that we’ve come across is former Grand Rapids, Michigan native Sam Cook-Parrott, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital. The heart-on-his-sleeve singer-songwriter captures true raw emotion in such beautifully poetic verses that could easily make the burliest man’s man shed a tear. However, these touching lyrics can easily be lost on some of the tracks of his new LP Something Wild (Salinas Records) because of the jangly, upbeat strums of major power chords from his guitar and his new driving rhythm section. Radiator Hospital will be celebrating the album’s release tonight at West Philly’s Great Indoors alongside labelmates/housemates Swearin’ and Batty, who are also dropping a demo release. Don’t sleep on this one! Great Indoors, (Please contact ghostlightbooking@gmail.com for more info.), 7pm, $5 Donation, All Ages - H.M. Kauffman

New Radiator Hospital LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

We've grown to become big fans of the songwriting by Michigan transplant Sam Cook-Parrot, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital. He manages to string together earnest, heartfelt/heartbreaking lyrics while his music remains uplifting, which is why we made his last EP Some Distant Moon our December 2012 Album of the Month. Well, we are obviously excited to hear that he'll be releasing a new full-length album on vinyl, backed by a full band, entitled Something Wild on July 15 via Salinas Records, who is also home to Swearin's rad self-titled LP. You can stream Radiator Hospital's record below and "name your price" for it HERE.

New Video: "Our Song" (Piss Couch Session) - Radiator Hospital

So we're pretty much enamored by the way Radiator Hostpital (a.k.a. Sean Cooke-Parrott) effortlessly makes upbeat strums of major chords matched with heart-wrenching lyrics so beautiful. It's a good reason why we made the oh so short EP, Some Distant Moon, our December 2012 Album of the Month. Here's a new beauty called "Our Song" from his upcoming album due out this spring that he performed for Maggot House's Piss Couch Session. Enjoy!

Radiator Hospital Heading South of the Border (of Market St.) at Jose Pistola’s Dec. 12

While I’m sure Radiator Hospital will be winning over the hearts of many performing in makeshift spaces, it always piques my interest to hear about established businesses that rarely host shows - if ever. Well, that will be happening tonight at Jose Pistola’s when the Center City Mexican restaurant/bar opens their doors to an all-ages show featuring Sam Cook-Parrott, whose current incarnation of Radiator Hospital includes some of the venue’s kitchen staff. It will also mark the live performance debut of West Philly outfit Great Thunder. So if you have no interest in seeing Paul McCartney bastardize Nirvana tunes on national television this evening, this is your opportunity to take a stand, and support some local music. I’m sure that it will be greatly appreciated. Jose Pistola’s, 263 S. 15th St., 9:30pm, Free, All Ages - H.M. Kauffman

The Deli Philly’s December Album of the Month: Some Distant Moon - Radiator Hospital

Sam Cook-Parrott, who records under the pseudonym Radiator Hospital, recently moved to Philly from Grand Rapids, Michigan, and just released his third EP of 2012 last month entitled Some Distant Moon. The record is merely four tracks, and ends long before you actually want it to - barley running over six minutes. It pulls you in from the very first listen forcing you to play it over and over again getting deeper and deeper into each song.

Opening track “Dead As Dreams” from the get-go interrelates the space theme found on the EP’s cover art and in its title by blasting into power chords and drums and lyrics like “I want to be the shooting star, I want to be the astronaut.” However, the album is actually more about the journey of finding love and the strange loneliness that can occur while trying to reach the final destination, even though you have someone there by your side. The protagonists go from laying beside a “cool girl” while not actually feeling happy (“Some Distant Moon”) to finding more connection with a dead childhood idol than the actual relationships with people in his own life (“Andy Griffith”) to the desire to kiss a person while knowing it’s a really bad idea (“A Game Of You”). The inner struggles that Cook-Parrett goes through with his tales and his unique ability to share raw emotions with others in such a way that many artists cannot is what makes this record so charming and endearing. Also, heartbreaking material like this rarely feels this much fun - a testament to his ability to compose such fine lo-fi, power-pop little ditties.

You can “name your price” and download Some Distant Moon at Radiator Hospital’s Bandcamp or purchase a copy of it on 7” vinyl via Forward Records. - H.M. Kauffman
