The Afropunk Festival is returning to Brooklyn this August 27th and 28th and we’ve got you covered with a playlist of all the local artists scheduled to play.  First up is Saul Williams – a poet as well as musician who melds poetry and hip-hop together in order to create a unique kind of alternative hip-hop.  The VeeVees, on the other hand, remind us that rock'n'roll is basically sped up, punhcy blues, a genre America stole from Africa.  The Whooligan slow things down with tracks full of meditative yet infectious electronica.  DJ Lindsey is no stranger to the DJ scene and creates catchy tracks that are tinged with nostalgia full of hip hop and soul vocals. On a similar line operates also DJ Juliana Huxtable, mixing tracks that are full of loud and danceable beats, but that really demand to be heard for themselves.  LSDXOXO accurately relates his music to “crying in club” as it blends melancholia, house and rap. Brooklyn based producer, CX Kidtronik makes bouncy hip hop infused with electronica, and last but not least, Dhundee combines a variety of sounds curated for dancing, experimenting with all kinds of instruments that aren’t used as often by others in the genre. - Madeleine Grossman

Opening with an eerie rendition of Peggy Lee's classic hit "Fever" before exploding with a gut-wrenching scream and three minutes of visceral rock-and-roll, the self-titled first track (streaming below) on "Cream of Heaven," the latest EP from Brooklyn's The VeeVees, is a charismatic throwback to the in-your-face attitude that rock was built on. The group puts out a vibrant and dynamic energy that will have you banging your head along with the overdriven guitars and driving drums. Lead singer Sophia Urista's voice is raw and powerful, bringing an element of punk to the rock-and-roll instrumentals, and commanding the attention of listeners. The EP, released back in June, starts off strong and is unrelenting over the course of its four songs, clocking in at a fast-paced fifteen minutes. The group recently performed at Irving Plaza and you can catch them next on September 28th at Knitting Factory. - Patrick Wolff

Nobody can underestimate the importance of CBGB's for the NYC music scene, and this year The Deli decided to take part in the festival that carries the venerable club's name with a bill of bands that rock in vintage ways. This show will also be our 40th issue's launch party!!

NYC’s The VeeVees recently added lead vocalist Sophia Urista to what was formerly a White Stripes/Kills/Black Keys-style act. With her vocal power, now its founding members, Garrett Cillo (guitar/vocals) and Andrea Belfiore (drums), can take things in the more epic direction of, say, Cream or Led Zepplin. (No shit?) With their sharp guitar riffs and pounding drums, fraught with sexy attitude and soulful edginess, Brooklyn-based The VeeVees epitomize rock ‘n roll in its most strict definition. The duo’s sound and presence will be growing by 33.3%, officially transitioning from a two-piece to a trio, since Garrett Cillo (vocals/guitar) and Andrea Belfiore (drums) are welcomimg bombshell Sophia Urista on vocals. The inaugural show is slated for May 2 at Pianos NYC, where The VeeVees will take the stage for a special hour-plus set, sharing the stage with local bluesy rockers Butchers of Sky Valley.
