Big Snow Buffalo farewell party at Silent Barn tonight (12.03): Twin Sister, Leapling, Ava Luna, Celestial Shore, Zula

Tonight Silent Barn will host the first farewell party for Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, a small Bushwick DIY venue whose life was abruptly cut short this July by a freaky shooting accident involving co-owner Yoni David. The lineup is nothing short of breathtaking, with adorable electro pop Brooklynites Twin Sister, two bands previously featured on the cover of our mag (Ava Luna and Celestial Shore), and two very interesting up and comers we recently covered (Zula and Leapling). Empress of is DJing.

A second farewell party is scheduled for December 5th at Shea Stadium with a bunch of cool newer bands we'll cover very soon.

Zula releases debut album + gets a mention in the NY Times

We are checking out all the sites that are featuring some kind of "Best of CMJ 2013" lists and we are noticing a worrying shortage of NYC bands. Spires and Empress Of seem to be the hottest NYC things coming out of CMJ this year, but rigorous electro-pop experimenters Zula also got a nice (and deserved) mention on the New York Times. The band actually has a debut album entiteld "This Hopeful" coming out on 10/29, and the preview single "And More Business" (streaming) is very promising. Check it out below, and see them live tonight at Brooklyn Bowl with Yellow Dogs, Papertwin and Dinowalrus.

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!

NYC Avant-Indie: Zula plays Silent Barns' block party on 06.21

In the mood for some dark, brooding weirdness? NYC's Zula - who last Wednesday opened for Deli Portland's favorites Radiation City at Mercury Lounge - will definitely fix you up in that department. With a debut LP brewing for the summer, the band takes its cues from a variety of places, from Krautrock to acid house and everything in between. Check out their captivating psychedelic samples and swirling effects in the track streaming below, entitled "Make Contact" or on their bandcamp page here, or see them live at Silent Barn's Block Party on June 21. - Zack Kraimer

Experimental indie-pop band Zula (pictured above) will be playing/hosting a show tonight (1.24) at Pianos with avant-indie-pop band Tony Castles. Zula, a psychedelic-electro take on indie-pop, is currently working on a debut album to be released this spring. The show will also include performances by Candide and Honey Octo. - Lucy Sherman
