PREMIERE: Force Publique - "Bind (Live)"

Let's say you dig hip-hop and shoegaze, and really wish there was something out there that seamlessly blended them both? Well, if you haven't dabbled in Force Publique yet, you probably should start now. The duo, consisting of Cassie Graves on guitar and vocals, and James Wayne on synths and MPC, produce such a full sound using only a few tools, eventualizing a sound alike if Beach House were to be a trap band.

The video we're premiering for Force Publique today is a live performance of their song "Bind," off their latest self-released tape, Bloom. "Bind (Live)" is a colorfully artistic interpretation, with its filming taking place at the Museum of Modern Life in Southeast Portland. The video casts you into an almost psychedelic trance aesthetically, so sit back and trip out with "Bind (Live)" below.

Antique Naked Soul Performs Live at Oakland Museum of California - 2/5

Antique Naked Soul is stepping out to perform on their home turf with two free shows this week. Singer Candice “Antique” Davis and her beat boxing counterparts are using nothing but their vocal chords to bring their audiences to a soulful hip-hop haven.

The team of hip-hop preservationists are putting on a two part event in Oakland on February 5th and 9th bringing together music, film, and activism . They will be performing at the Oakland Museum of California on friday at 7 pm, and at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland on Tuesday. The latter performance will be accompanied by a screening of “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution”.

The group released their debut album back in 2013 to an exceedingly satisfied audience, and have since been working on a follow up release due some time this year. Thus far Antique Naked Soul’s formula involves looping and layering vocal percussions and melodies to establish a full base sound, on top of which Antique’s soulful lyrics contribute the crucial layer that beautiful ties together their innovative, distinct, and powerful sound. The leading lady of this ensemble, is not only a talented creative, but also a proactive educator. She teaches the necessity of social and racial justice, both in the classroom and in the studio. This weeks performances serves as a direct example of Antique Naked Soul’s desire to utilize their creativity to inspire transformation in people and culture. -Julia deAnda

CAPYAC Gets Down to Some Serious Cupcake 'n Funk Business in New Music Video

A musical act with a good sense of humor (that’s actually fuckin’ funny) that’s also straight killer when making more serious-minded shit is a hard thing to find. Count one more then in the ever-growing lists of reasons why Austin, and the world at large, is lucky to have CAPYAC, the city’s premier future funky outfit and the new group that made arguably the biggest impact on at least this writer’s 2015. With their new EP “Movement Swallows Us” still warm out of the oven, CAPYAC has elected not to rest on the merits of its already classic recent work and has released a new track called “Mama Never Told Me” that reveals that the funky-sexy duo also has a damn silly side to it.

“Mama Never Told Me” is basically about cupcakes, bright-ass colors, the funk, babies and some wildly-bedecked Austinites (including the band itself) gettin’ down to it all like it’s some serious fuk’n bizness. Producer Delwin Campbell is still riding the hothand here with another damn fine beat, this time anchored by a “Mama/Said” sample that is timed with sickness, and as ever Eric Peana is a funk vocalist master, this time with a tongue-in-cheek sexyfunk rap thing going on.

In the end though, the best way to get prepped for this excellent new addition to the catalog of Austin’s most exciting, most future-ready act is to read about it in their own inimitable words:

“Official release statement from Capyac:

Hello from Chez Capyac. Today we have the honor and privilege and honorable privilege to introduce to you our first food-related single. Why sing about food? Because singing and food share a mouth. When we were first approached by world famous director Meredith, we knew she had something. What did she have? Cupcakes. Magic. Studio magic. Ever heard of Hollywood?"

We have indeed, CAPYAC. We have indeed.
